Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Doctoral Fellowship (2) in the Study of the Quran (August 15 2012 - May 15 2013)

Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Doctoral Fellowship (2) in the Study of the Quran

University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, IN, USA)

The University of Notre Dame invites applications for one post-doctoral fellow and two doctoral fellows to work with The Quran Seminar during the academic year (August 15-May 15) 2012-13. The fellows are to be active participants in the Seminar and in residence at Notre Dame throughout this period. They will also play a role in organizing seminar meetings, managing the seminar’s online forum, and assisting with administrative responsibilities. Meanwhile they will be provided with appropriate resources to continue their independent research while in residence at Notre Dame.

The Quran Seminar, funded by a Sawyer seminar grant from the Mellon Foundation, is a one year project involving a small team of advanced researchers on the Quran who will meet periodically during the academic year 2012-13 and correspond regularly in the Seminar’s online forum. The Seminar is meant to host a collaborative discussion on the Quran. Its methodology is Quranist : participants will be asked to reflect on the Quran’s literary and linguistic qualities, its relationship to earlier (especially Biblical) literatures, and to the historical context of the Late Antique Near East.

The post-doctoral fellow position includes a stipend of $40,000 (plus benefits) for the nine-month period of the grant. The doctoral positions include a stipend of $20,000 (plus benefits) for the nine-month period. Applicants to the doctoral fellowships must be in the dissertation phase of their program (ABD) before the beginning of the Seminar.

Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2011. Applicants for both positions should submit a letter of application, CV, and two letters of recommendation to Clair Mesick at Clair.E.Mesick.1@nd.edu or Clair Mesick, Department of Theology, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN 46556, USA. For more information about the fellowships or the Seminar contact Gabriel Said Reynolds at Reynolds@nd.edu or Mehdi Azaiez at mehdi.azaiez@yahoo.fr.
