This collection of essays, organized as a part of the celebration of the seventy-fifth birthday of Professor Issa J. Boullata of the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University, is devoted to elucidating the many dimensions of understanding the Qur’an. Issa Boullata has spent his scholarly career teaching and writing prolifically on Arabic literature in general and especially the Qur’an, inspiring a generation of scholars in their reflections and analysis of the qualities of the Muslim sacred text. Many of those students, along with a groups of friends, have contributed essays all of which are devoted to explicating the Qur’an in its historical and contemporary contexts. They constitute a tribute to the way in which Issa Boullata has affected the academic study of the Qur’an in Canada, the United States, Indonesia, and around the world. When the Middle East Studies Association awarded its 2004 Mentoring Award to Boullata, he was commended for being “an outstanding mentor who has introduced so many to the joys of scholarship and who has, through his generous sharing of knowledge, encouraged the careers of generations of students and colleagues.” The fourteen essays of this volume are testimony to that, each of them devoted to explicating the Qur’an in its historical and contemporary contexts.

Cette collection d’essais, organisée dans le cadre de la célébration du soixante-cinquième anniversaire du Professeur J. Issa Boullata de l’Institut d’études islamiques de l’Université McGill, se consacre à une meilleure compréhension des nombreuses dimensions du Coran. Issa Boullata a passé sa carrière universitaire à enseigner et écrire abondamment sur la littérature arabe en général et en particulier sur le Coran, inspirant une génération de chercheurs dans leurs réflexions et contribuant à la qualité de leurs analyses des textes sacrés musulmans. Bon nombre de ces étudiants, avec un groupe d’amis, ont contribué à l’ensemble de ces essais qui sont consacrés à l’interprétation du Coran dans ses contextes historique et contemporain. Ils constituent un hommage à la manière dont Issa Boullata a influencé l’étude universitaire du Coran au Canada, aux États-Unis, Indonésie, et dans le monde entier. Khaleel Mohammed is Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at San Diego State University. He is also a core-faculty member of that institution’s Center for Islamic and Arabic Studies. Andrew Rippin he is the author of Muslims : their Religious Beliefs and Practices . He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Professor of Islamic History at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
