The subject of this dissertation is an inquiry into the origin and the meaning of fasting in the Koran. It deals not only with the fast of Ramadan, but also with other forms of fasting which are mentioned in the Koran. However, the inquiry into the origin and the meaning of the fast of Ramadan forms the principal part of this study. (p. 1)
