Nuha al-Sha&#8216;ar, The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The term adab has been a subject for debate and discussion in modern scholarship. This paper aims to visit and reflect on this concept by rethinking the definition of adab through its relationship with the Qur'an. The paper also explores the etymological origin and the lexical understanding of the term as it occurs in medieval Arabic lexicological dictionaries and classical sources. This is in order to be able to determine a notion of the formation and evolution of the term. In doing so, the paper will show that the Qur'an was an integral element in this formation.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The paper further highlights the history of the various uses of the term adab, particularly the application of adab as essential for character formation and the cultivation of virtues, and as such, as a moral code for observing &#8216;rules of behaviour' that would lead to happiness in this life and the hereafter. The paper will show how the process of the creation of meanings and themes of adab works seems to have been shaped by the ethical world of the Qur'an.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Many scholars have studied the Qur'an's importance in religious literature, however less attention has been paid to the influence of the Qur'an and its exegesis upon the kind of activity that was later to be known as adab (classical Arabic literature), and how in turn the udaba' contributed to the reception history of the Qur'an.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;This colloquium aims to examine the use of and different responses to the Qur'an and its narratives in the works of the udaba' of the 9th - 15th centuries. It will explore the diverse ways in which udaba' in the classical period employed the concepts, stories, images, and language of the Qur'an. A larger aim of the colloquium is to investigate how the Qur'an shaped the concept of adab itself, and the ways of thinking or ethical values which adab works attempted to construct, and which were appropriated to a wider framework. It will also demonstrate that experiences with the Qur'an are not limited to formal exegesis, but that udaba' often employ the Qur'anic text in a variety of contexts in different ways. Relevant un v&#233;ritable d&#233;fi, le pr&#233;sent ouvrage propose un expos&#233; syst&#233;matique des proc&#233;d&#233;s d'&#233;criture (ou rh&#233;toriques) qui assurent au contraire la coh&#233;rence du discours coranique.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Les ouvrages qui se sont int&#233;ress&#233;s &#224; la rh&#233;torique ou &#224; l'argumentation, dans le Coran, se situent g&#233;n&#233;ralement dans la perspective de la rh&#233;torique grecque selon laquelle les parties du discours doivent suivre un ordre logique lin&#233;aire. Or, les anciens textes s&#233;mitiques, dont fait partie le Coran, n'ob&#233;issent pas &#224; cette logique-l&#224;. Leur principe de base n'est pas la lin&#233;arit&#233; progressive, mais la sym&#233;trie. Une sym&#233;trie qui peut prendre diverses formes, suivant des r&#232;gles pr&#233;cises. La connaissance de ce code rh&#233;torique &#8211; objet du pr&#233;sent ouvrage &#8211; permet d'entrer avec plus d'assurance dans la compr&#233;hension du texte.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Les r&#232;gles de la rh&#233;torique s&#233;mitique n'ont malheureusement pas &#233;t&#233; consign&#233;es par les scribes du monde ancien proche oriental, comme l'ont &#233;t&#233; les r&#232;gles de la rh&#233;torique grecque par Aristote et ses successeurs. C'est &#224; partir de l'examen minutieux des textes de la Bible, qu'une lign&#233;e de savants a progressivement red&#233;couvert, depuis le milieu du XVIIIe si&#232;cle, les principes qui g&#233;raient leur composition. Aujourd'hui, cette th&#233;orie est arriv&#233;e &#224; maturit&#233;, et Roland Meynet, ex&#233;g&#232;te de la Bible, a pu en faire un expos&#233; syst&#233;matique dans son grand Tra&#238;t&#233; de rh&#233;torique biblique, paru dans la m&#234;me collection. Le pr&#233;sent ouvrage s'en inspire largement, pour proposer au lecteur une synth&#232;se th&#233;orique de &#171; la rh&#233;torique coranique &#187;, illustr&#233;e par de nombreux exemples tir&#233;s du Coran. &#192; c&#244;t&#233; des r&#232;gles de cette rh&#233;torique, l'ouvrage propose &#224; l'&#233;tudiant ou au chercheur une m&#233;thodologie pour leur application, dans le but d'aboutir &#224; une ex&#233;g&#232;se du Coran, qui soit r&#233;ellement fond&#233;e sur le texte.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The text of the Qur'an appears to many people desperately muddled and lacking any coherence. Taking up a real challenge, the present work proposes a systematic presentation of the writing processes (or rhetoric) which insure on the contrary the coherence of the Qur'anic speech. The works interested in rhetoric or argumentation, in the Qur'an, are generally situated in the perspective of the Greek rhetoric according to which parts of speech have to follow a linear logical order. Yet, the ancient Semitic texts, of which the Qur'an is a part, do not obey this logic. Their basic principle is not the progressive linearity, but the symmetry. A symmetry which can take several forms, following precise rules. The knowledge of this rhetorical code - object of the present work - allows entering with more assurance the understanding of the text.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The rules of the Semitic rhetoric were regrettably not written down by the scribes of the ancient oriental world, as were the rules of the Greek rhetoric by Aristotle and his successors. It is from the meticulous examination of the texts of the Bible, that a lineage of scholars gradually rediscovered, since the middle of the XVIIIth century, the principles which managed their composition. Today, this theory is reached maturity, and Roland Meynet, exegete of the Bible, was able to make a systematic presentation of it in his important Tra&#238;t&#233; de Rh&#233;torique biblique (soon published in English), available in the same collection. The present work is widely inspired by it, in order to propose to the reader a theoretical synthesis of &quot;the Qur'anic rhetoric&quot;, illustrated by numerous examples borrowed from the Qur'an. Written in 5th/11th century Nishapur, an intellectual and cultural crossroads of the Muslim world, the Lat&#257;'if al-Ish&#257;r&#257;t has endured down through the centuries as an important work of Sufi exegesis. A mystical vision of reality is taught through its line-by-line treatment of the Qur'an as its author was writing as both a Sufi teacher and scholar. This study fully investigates al-Qushayr&#299;'s life and historical horizon and carefully analyses the structure and method of the commentary. The primary aim of the book is to draw greater attention to the other traditions of exegesis that inform the Sufi approach of the Lat&#257;'if al-Ish&#257;r&#257;t, an understudied feature of many Sufi commentaries in general. In the case of this commentary, scholarly and pedagogical concerns for language, prophetic sayings, law and theology are interwoven into al-Qushayr&#299;'s overarching mystical exegesis. Other important aspects of the author's intellectual identity and education clearly influenced the formation of al-Qushayr&#299;'s Sufi worldview and as a consequence his interpretation of God's word. Shoemaker investigates contradictory traditions about the end of Muhammad's life in the Islamic and non-Islamic sources of the seventh and eighth centuries.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The oldest Islamic biography of Muhammad, written in the mid-eighth century, relates that the prophet died at Medina in 632, while earlier and more numerous Jewish, Christian, Samaritan, and even Islamic sources indicate that Muhammad survived to lead the conquest of Palestine, beginning in 634-35. Although this discrepancy has been known for several decades, Stephen J. Shoemaker here writes the first systematic study of the various traditions.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Using methods and perspectives borrowed from biblical studies, Shoemaker concludes that these reports of Muhammad's leadership during the Palestinian invasion likely preserve an early Islamic tradition that was later revised to meet the needs of a changing Islamic self-identity. Muhammad and his followers appear to have expected the world to end in the immediate future, perhaps even in their own lifetimes, Shoemaker contends. When the eschatological Hour failed to arrive on schedule and continued to be deferred to an ever more distant point, the meaning of Muhammad's message and the faith that he established needed to be fundamentally rethought by his early followers.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The larger purpose of The Death of a Prophet exceeds the mere possibility of adjusting the date of Muhammad's death by a few years ; far more important to Shoemaker are questions about the manner in which Islamic origins should be studied. The difference in the early sources affords an important opening through which to explore the nature of primitive Islam more broadly.
